In Johannesburg people have razor-wire (as on the previous
page) on top of there 2 - 3 m high alarmed walls around their lawns in the
villa-suburbs. The walls were put up in the early 90's, when the criminality
increased so drastically I was told. I even saw the walls in the better
parts of Soweto, which is not at all just the 'shantytown' I had expected
it to be. People also have alarms and large dogs, that are not taken out
for walks, but that get their exercise thru' running around in the lawn
barking and throwing themselves against the walls when people pass by in
the street outside. |

Most
families also have guns. This is a friend who looks at his neighbour's newly-baught
gun and compares it to his own. He always carries a gun and I joined him
to the shooting-range one week-end, since I was so fascinated by this 'purchased'
safety and security with and without a gun. Another friend had a boss who
was shot when his store was robbed and his gun did not work in April. Anyhow,
I found it to be a lot of fun to shoot at the range! |

Another
'ugly' side of Johannesburg, but I think that this,
the Power Station, is so pretty in a run-down way. Hundreds of families
live in here and seep on 'shelves' on the walls, since there are no floors
in there. I thought that it would have been 'neat' to see what it is like
and maybe video-film in there, but when I did from the backside I just felt
horendous about the misery in there. |
